Participating in Universify

Participants on the Universify programme take part in our year-long programme starting with a summer residential at the end of Year 10, followed by monthly coaching, before returning in the spring of Year 11 for a revision weekend.

Experiencing university life

By taking part in two residentials, one in the summer and one in the spring, participants gain a taste of what living and studying at university is like.

Like an undergraduate student, participants will have seminar-style classes delivered by subject experts, learning about university life from current undergraduate students, and having the chance to explore university and the university city for themselves.

Setting goals and working towards achieving academic ambitions

Every participant will be paired with a Universify coach, who is a current or recent university student and will support the participant in setting goals to help them achieve their aspirations. The participant will be in touch with their coach on a monthly basis, as well as catching up face-to-face at the residentials. The ongoing coaching will help reflect on progress towards the participant’s goals and create plans for the future.

Boosting GCSE grades

During March or April of Year 11 participants will return to their host university to attend a GCSE revision weekend. Here they will have a chance to receive intensive revision classes in either Maths, English or Sciences, as well as gaining support in how to look after themselves throughout the exams and best prepare for their upcoming GCSEs so they can achieve the best possible grades.

Participants will also have the chance to catch up with their coach face-to-face again, checking in with the goals they have been working towards in the monthly sessions, and outlining a plan for their GCSEs. After the Spring revision weekend their coach will stay in touch right up until the end of the GCSEs, working together to achieve the grades set as a goal by the participant.

Creating a plan for the future

The Universify programme is only the beginning of an exciting journey and an opportunity to discover what options university offers and how to continue exploring routes into university and achieving participants’ aspirations.

The participants will learn about all the programmes they can take part in after Universify and hear from graduates about the range of careers they pursued after university.

How can my school take part?

We partner with non-selective state schools and offer each school up to four places on our programme.

We are looking for students who are currently in Year 10 and have the potential to do well in their GCSEs (six or more B grades / 6s). If your schools have students with this potential — but maybe not yet the belief or desire to apply for university one day — we’re probably looking for your school.

To take part in the programme we require schools to register via a lead teacher, who will act as our point of contact throughout the programme. In the first instance we work with our university partner’s target areas but aim to partner with as many schools as we can — as spaces are limited we will add schools to a waiting list if necessary.

If your school wants to participate please write us an email and we will be pleased to come back to you.
